Why in News?

The Sangeet Natak Akademi (SNA) announced its Fellowship, Akademi Awards and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for the 2024 and 2025 cycles. The announcement was made on 10 June 2026 following the General Council meeting held in New Delhi. The Council selected seven Akademi Fellows, 108 Akademi Awardees, and 106 young artists for the Yuva Puraskar.

The honours recognise outstanding contributions to music, dance, theatre, folk and tribal arts, puppetry, and other performing arts.

Sangeet Natak Akademi and Award Structure

The Sangeet Natak Akademi is India’s national academy for music, dance and drama. It functions under the Ministry of Culture and plays an important role in recognising and promoting India’s performing arts traditions.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, popularly known as Akademi Ratna, is the Akademi’s highest honour. The Fellowship is a prestigious and rare distinction, with the number of Fellows restricted to 40 at any given time.

The Akademi Awards, or Akademi Puraskar, recognise sustained excellence across several performing-art forms. The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar recognises promising young artists.

Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2024–2025

The seven selected Akademi Fellows are Ramlal Bareth, A. V. Anand, Rita Ganguly, Puru Dadheech, Chittaranjan Jyotishi, Pasumarthi Rattaiah Sarma, and Sudharani Raghupathy.

The 2024 music awardees include Arun Nagesh Kashalkar, Nirmalya Dey, Bharat Bhushan Goswami, Sanjay Mukherjee, K. Vageesh, and Rakesh Chaurasia. Dance awardees include Rajeswari Sainath, Bipul Chandra Das, Rajkumari Thambalsana Devi, Veena Murthy Vijay, Bichitrananda Swain, Prema Ozah Borbayan, and Sreedevi Rajan. The official list confirms the broader selection across music, dance, theatre, traditional and folk arts, puppetry, and scholarship.

The President of India will confer the Fellowship and Awards at a special investiture ceremony in New Delhi. The supplied information places the ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan on 13 August 2026. The Akademi’s official guidelines provide for presentation by the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, or another eminent personality.

The Sangeet Natak Akademi has also been designated as the nodal agency for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) matters under the Ministry of Culture. It documents and promotes India’s diverse traditional, folk and tribal performing arts.
