Nobel Prize in Medicine 2026 Awarded for Optogenetics
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 was awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel on 5 October 2026. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, recognised their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Their work has enabled scientists to control the activity of specific cells, particularly neurons, using light and has become an important tool in modern neuroscience.
What is Optogenetics?
Optogenetics is a biological technique that combines optics and genetics to control the activity of cells using light-sensitive proteins. The technique is particularly important in neuroscience because it allows researchers to activate or inhibit specific neurons with high precision. This has helped scientists investigate how neural circuits influence processes such as memory, emotion and behaviour in living brains.
Channelrhodopsin and Light-Gated Ion Channels
The scientific foundation of optogenetics includes the discovery of channelrhodopsin, a light-sensitive protein found in a single-celled alga.
Peter Hegemann of Humboldt University of Berlin and Georg Nagel of the University of Würzburg studied channelrhodopsin and established that it functions as a light-controlled ion channel. It opens in response to light, allowing ions to pass through the cell membrane.
Karl Deisseroth, associated with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University, subsequently helped transform this discovery into a practical tool for controlling neuronal activity in living tissue.
This work established optogenetics as a powerful laboratory method for studying the nervous system.
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is one of the five Nobel Prizes established through the will of Alfred Nobel. The prize is awarded by the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet. The 2026 prize carried 12 million Swedish kronor, shared equally among the three laureates. The Nobel Prizes are formally presented every year on 10 December, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel. The 2026 Nobel Prize award ceremony is scheduled for 10 December 2026.
