Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026: Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai

Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discoveries concerning non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis. The award was announced by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on 7 October 2026. The Nobel Prize carries a monetary award of 12 million Swedish kronor.

Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai: Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2026

Henri B. Kagan is associated with Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, France, while Kenso Soai is associated with the Tokyo University of Science, Japan. Their research has contributed significantly to the understanding of chiral molecules and the processes used to preferentially produce one form of a molecule during chemical synthesis. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is one of the five original Nobel Prizes established through the will of Alfred Nobel. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is responsible for selecting the Chemistry laureates. The Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901.

What is Asymmetric Synthesis?

Asymmetric synthesis is a chemical process designed to preferentially produce one enantiomer of a molecule over its mirror-image counterpart. Enantiomers have:

  • The same molecular formula.
  • The same connectivity of atoms.
  • Different three-dimensional arrangements.
  • Often different biological properties.

This is particularly important in pharmaceuticals because two enantiomers of the same compound can have different effects in the human body.

Non-Linear Effects in Asymmetric Synthesis

Henri B. Kagan’s work is associated with non-linear effects, where the relationship between the composition of a chiral catalyst and the stereochemical composition of the resulting product is not proportional. This phenomenon can significantly influence the enantiomeric excess (ee) of a chemical reaction. Enantiomeric excess indicates the degree to which one enantiomer predominates over another in a mixture.

Autocatalysis and Kenso Soai

Autocatalysis occurs when a product of a chemical reaction acts as a catalyst for the same reaction. Kenso Soai is particularly associated with asymmetric autocatalysis, in which a chiral product can promote the formation of additional molecules having the same molecular handedness. This research is important for understanding how molecular asymmetry and chirality can become amplified during chemical reactions.
