Navi Pillay Wins Nobel Peace Prize 2026

Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African jurist and human rights champion, was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on 9 October 2026 for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognised her longstanding contribution to strengthening international justice and ensuring accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Her award highlights the importance of the rule of law in maintaining global peace.

Who Is Navi Pillay?

Born in 1941 in Durban, South Africa, Pillay grew up under apartheid, a system of institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination. Coming from a family of Indian Tamil origin, she became a pioneering lawyer who defended anti-apartheid activists and challenged discrimination. In 1967, she established her own law practice, becoming the first woman to do so in her home province of Natal. Her career subsequently expanded into international criminal justice and human rights.

Contribution to International Justice

Pillay has held several important positions in international legal institutions:

  • International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR): She served as a judge and later President of the tribunal from 1999 to 2003. Her work contributed to recognising that rape and sexual violence can constitute crimes against humanity and acts of genocide.
  • International Criminal Court (ICC): She served as a judge in its Appeals Chamber from 2003 to 2008.
  • UN High Commissioner for Human Rights: She held this position from 2008 to 2014, promoting the protection of fundamental rights worldwide.
  • International Court of Justice (ICJ): Since 2019, she has served as an ad hoc judge in the case brought by The Gambia against Myanmar under the Genocide Convention. She also chaired a UN commission of inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory from 2021 to 2025.
