Swavlamban 2026

Why in News?

The Indian Navy will host the fifth edition of Swavlamban, its Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Seminar, on 26–27 October 2026 at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. The seminar aims to accelerate indigenous defence technology development by connecting the armed forces with innovators, start-ups, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), industry, academia and investors.

The initiative supports India’s broader objective of achieving Aatmanirbharta in defence by developing domestic technologies and reducing dependence on imported military equipment.

About Swavlamban 2026

Swavlamban is an Indian Navy initiative focused on promoting innovation, indigenisation and collaboration between defence users and technology developers. It provides a platform for identifying operational challenges and translating innovative ideas into practical military capabilities.

The seminar began in 2022, attracting approximately 800 participants during its first edition. Participation increased to nearly 3,000 in 2025. More than 100 exhibition stalls are expected at the 2026 edition.

The event brings together defence personnel, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors and industrial organisations to demonstrate technologies, exchange ideas and explore opportunities for indigenous defence production.

Key Technologies and Areas of Focus

Swavlamban 2026 will showcase emerging technologies relevant to maritime security, surveillance, navigation and combat operations.

Major areas include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI): Supporting data analysis, decision-making, surveillance and autonomous operations.
  • Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Counter-UAS): Detecting, tracking and countering hostile drones.
  • Quantum Technologies: Developing advanced navigation, sensing and secure communication capabilities.
  • Nuclear, Biological, Chemical and Radiological (NBCR) Defence: Strengthening protection, detection and response capabilities against hazardous threats.
  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs): Supporting underwater surveillance, reconnaissance and maritime operations.
  • Directed-Energy Systems: Exploring high-power microwave technologies for defence applications.
  • Indigenous Propulsion Technologies: Advancing domestic capabilities for naval aviation and other military platforms.

The Navy’s indigenisation efforts also include quantum positioning systems, extra-large autonomous underwater vehicles and indigenous ramjet engines for fixed-wing aircraft.

Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX)

Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) is a Government of India initiative that promotes innovation in defence and aerospace by engaging start-ups, MSMEs, individual innovators and research organisations.

It seeks to connect emerging technology developers with the operational requirements of the armed forces and encourage the development of indigenous solutions.

According to the figures cited for Swavlamban 2026, iDEX has received more than 4,000 proposals. Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) has been accorded for projects worth over ₹3,500 crore, while contracts valued at more than ₹1,900 crore have been concluded.

These figures indicate the scale of efforts to convert domestic innovation into defence procurement and operational capability.

Indian Navy’s Indigenisation and Procurement Pipeline

Swavlamban forms part of a wider effort to strengthen the domestic defence industrial ecosystem. The Indian Navy is pursuing indigenous platforms and equipment to improve operational readiness and technological self-reliance.

The procurement figures cited ahead of the seminar include:

  • 42 platforms on order.
  • Acceptance of Necessity for an additional 78 platforms.
  • AoN for 120 Fast Interceptor Craft (FICs).
  • A combined estimated value of ₹2.41 lakh crore for the specified procurement pipeline.
  • Requests for Proposals issued for four Landing Platform Docks and next-generation frigates.

Acceptance of Necessity is an important stage in the defence procurement process, indicating approval to pursue the acquisition of a specified capability. It should not be confused with the signing of a procurement contract or the delivery of equipment.

Significance of Swavlamban 2026

1. Defence self-reliance: Indigenous technologies can reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and improve supply-chain resilience.

2. Maritime security: Domestic capabilities in underwater systems, surveillance and counter-drone technologies can strengthen India’s ability to address evolving maritime threats.

3. Support for start-ups and MSMEs: Collaboration with the Navy can create opportunities for smaller enterprises to develop and supply specialised defence technologies.

4. Research and development: Partnerships among industry, academia and the armed forces can accelerate the transition from research to operational deployment.

5. Defence industrial growth: Greater domestic production can strengthen technological expertise, skilled employment and India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.

However, successful indigenisation also depends on rigorous testing, reliability, timely procurement, cost-effectiveness and the ability to manufacture equipment at scale.
