36th Ig Nobel Prize 2026

Why in News?

The 36th annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony was held on 3 September 2026 at the Zurich Convention Center in Switzerland. The 2026 ceremony marked the first time the Ig Nobel Prize event was hosted outside the United States. The awards are associated with the Annals of Improbable Research, a publication known for highlighting unusual scientific research.

What is the Ig Nobel Prize?

The Ig Nobel Prize is a satirical award series that recognises research with unusual, humorous or unexpected themes. Despite its humorous character, the awards often highlight genuine scientific studies. They encourage people to become interested in science and question conventional ideas. Awards can cover diverse disciplines, including Chemistry, Medicine, Biology, Physics, Economics and Peace-related research.

Notable Ig Nobel Prize 2026 Winners

Chemistry Prize

The Chemistry Prize went to Leonard “Leo” Chavas, Ramaswamy Subramanian and Nathan Coussens. Their research examined protein crystals in the milk of the Pacific beetle cockroach. The study reported that this milk contains more than three times the energy of cow’s milk.

Medicine Prize

The Medicine Prize was awarded posthumously to Tokuji Unno of Asahikawa Medical University. His 1977 aerodynamic study examined how people blow their noses. Miki Takahara accepted the award on his behalf.

Biomechanics Prize

The Biomechanics Prize recognised Matilda Brindle, Stuart West and Catherine F. Talbot. Their research attempted to scientifically define kissing across species. The study considered ants, birds, polar bears and humans.

Other Research Recognised

The Soil Science Prize recognised the “Underwear as Evidence” project. Researchers used 2,000 buried cotton underwear pieces to study soil health.

The Economics Prize recognised research examining unethical behaviour among wealthier individuals. One experiment involved candy reserved for children.

The Biology Prize recognised research involving stepping on venomous snakes to examine bite triggers. Later coverage reported that the study was retracted over concerns regarding animal research protocols.
