INS Mahendragiri (F38) to be Commissioned into the Indian Navy
Why in News?
The Indian Navy will commission INS Mahendragiri (F38), the sixth Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) stealth frigate, on 11 July 2026 at Visakhapatnam. The warship will join the Eastern Fleet under the Eastern Naval Command.
Key Highlights
- INS Mahendragiri is an indigenously designed and built stealth frigate with over 75% indigenous content.
- Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
- Equipped with surface-to-surface missiles, surface-to-air missiles, anti-submarine warfare systems, electronic warfare systems, and a CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) propulsion system.
- Named after the Mahendragiri Hills in the Eastern Ghats, it is the first Indian Naval warship to carry this name.
Importance for Exams
- Project 17A is the successor to the Shivalik-class (Project 17) stealth frigates.
- INS Mahendragiri strengthens India’s maritime capabilities and supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative through indigenous warship construction.
