Indian Navy to Commission INS Dunagiri, INS Agray, and INS Sanshodhak
Why in News?
The Indian Navy will commission three indigenously built warships—INS Dunagiri, INS Agray, and INS Sanshodhak—on 21 June 2026 in Kolkata. All three vessels were designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata.

About INS Dunagiri: Project 17A Stealth Frigate
INS Dunagiri is the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate and the second vessel of this class built by GRSE. Project 17A is the successor to the Shivalik-class frigates and incorporates advanced stealth features, modern sensors, and integrated combat systems.
The frigate is equipped with:
- BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
- Advanced air-defence systems
- Anti-submarine warfare weapons
It is designed for surface warfare, anti-air warfare, and anti-submarine warfare operations.
Project 17 A
Project 17A is the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate programme and is a follow-on project to the Shivalik-class (Project 17) frigates, featuring advanced weapons, sensors, and stealth technology.
About INS Agray and INS Sanshodhak
INS Agray
INS Agray is an Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) designed to operate in coastal and shallow waters. The vessel can detect, track, and neutralize hostile submarines using:
- Lightweight torpedoes
- Anti-submarine rocket launchers
- 30 mm naval gun
INS Sanshodhak
INS Sanshodhak is the fourth and final Sandhayak-class Survey Vessel. It will undertake:
- Hydrographic surveys
- Seabed mapping
- Underwater data collection
- Navigation support
The vessel carries Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for underwater survey missions.
