
India’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar Inaugurated at Sambalpur, Odisha
Why in News?
India’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) was inaugurated at Jamadarpali in Sambalpur, Odisha, on 16 September 2026. The facility is a Make in India installation under Mission Mausam and strengthens weather observation and early-warning capabilities across western Odisha. With this installation, Odisha now has three Doppler Weather Radars, located at Sambalpur, Paradip and Gopalpur. The new radar will provide weather information for 13 districts of Odisha and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
What is a Doppler Weather Radar?
A Doppler Weather Radar is a meteorological observation system that uses the Doppler effect to detect the movement of precipitation particles and atmospheric air. It transmits microwave signals and analyses the signals reflected by raindrops, hail and other particles. The frequency shift in the returned signal helps meteorologists estimate the velocity and movement of weather systems.
DWRs are particularly important for:

- Thunderstorm and lightning monitoring

Key Features of Sambalpur Doppler Weather Radar
The Sambalpur radar is a C-band Doppler Weather Radar. It can provide accurate weather information within approximately 250 km and track weather systems at greater distances. The system can estimate rainfall at 150-metre resolution every 10 minutes, providing high-frequency weather information for local forecasting and disaster preparedness. The radar will serve 13 districts of western Odisha and extend meteorological coverage into parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.
Importance for Agriculture and Disaster Management
The radar will improve early warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and heavy rainfall. This is particularly important for agriculture in the Mahanadi basin. Timely weather information can help farmers take precautionary measures against crop damage. The radar will also support rainfall monitoring and inflow management of the Hirakud Reservoir. Its data can further assist disaster management, power and energy operations, transportation and other weather-sensitive sectors.
Mission Mausam and India’s Weather Radar Network
Mission Mausam is a Government of India initiative under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. It aims to modernise India’s weather observation, modelling, forecasting and early-warning infrastructure. India had only 14 Doppler Weather Radars in 2014. With the Sambalpur installation, the national network has reached 51 radars. The government plans to add around 40 more radars under Mission Mausam.
