Why in News?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the key dates for the fifth edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The WPL 2027 season will be played from 14 January to 7 February 2027. The five participating franchises must submit their player-retention lists by 28 September 2026. The WPL 2027 Player Auction will then be held on 28 October 2026 at the Grand Hyatt Kochi.
What is the Women’s Premier League?
The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is an Indian franchise-based Twenty20 cricket tournament for women. It was launched in 2023 by the BCCI. The league currently features five franchises:
- Delhi Capitals
- Gujarat Giants
- Mumbai Indians
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru
- UP Warriorz
The tournament provides a professional platform for Indian and international women cricketers and supports the development of women’s T20 cricket in India.

The host cities and complete match schedule for WPL 2027 have not yet been announced. Therefore, previously used venues such as Mumbai and Vadodara should not be treated as confirmed hosts for the 2027 edition.
RCB Enter WPL 2027 as Defending Champions
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the 2026 WPL title, defeating Delhi Capitals by six wickets in the final at Vadodara. RCB successfully chased a target of 204 runs, securing its second WPL championship. Mumbai Indians and RCB are now the two franchises to have won the WPL twice.
