Why in News?

India has sent its largest-ever contingent of 70 skilled competitors to the 48th WorldSkills Competition, scheduled from 22 to 27 September 2026 in Shanghai, China. The Indian team will compete in 63 of the 64 skill categories at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre (NECC), Shanghai. The event provides a global platform for young professionals and trainees to demonstrate technical expertise, innovation, and vocational excellence. Source: PIB

What is the WorldSkills Competition?

The WorldSkills Competition is a major international event that promotes excellence in vocational education and technical skills. It is often described as the “Olympics of Skills.” Competitions cover diverse sectors, including construction, manufacturing, information technology, engineering, transportation, and service industries.

The competition enables young professionals to benchmark their abilities against international standards and encourages industry-linked skill development.

India’s Participation in WorldSkills 2026

India will participate in 63 skill categories, including 11 categories in which it is competing for the first time. These new categories are:

Dental Prosthetics
Digital Interactive Media Design
Intelligent Security Technology
Landscape Gardening
Optoelectronic Technology
Retail Sales
Unmanned Aerial Systems
Industrial Mechanics
Software Testing
Heavy Vehicle Technology
Aircraft Maintenance

The Indian contingent represents participants from 16 states. Karnataka, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu have significant representation in the team. The participation reflects India’s expanding focus on advanced technologies, specialised services, and future-ready skills.

Institutional Support and India’s Performance

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) are coordinating India’s participation and preparation. A send-off ceremony was held at Kaushal Bhawan, New Delhi, on 15 September 2026. Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary addressed the contingent.

Jindal Steel has joined as the official merchandise sponsor for Team India’s WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 campaign.

India’s position at international skills competitions improved from 29th in 2015 to 13th at WorldSkills Lyon 2024. India secured four Bronze Medals and 12 Medallions for Excellence in the 2024 edition.
