History and Significance of World Population Day

The origin of World Population Day dates back to 11 July 1987, popularly known as the “Day of Five Billion,” when the global population reached approximately five billion. The milestone drew international attention to the challenges posed by rapid population growth.

Recognising the growing importance of population-related issues, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) officially established World Population Day in 1989. Since then, the day has served as a global platform for promoting awareness about maternal health, family planning, gender equality, poverty reduction, migration, employment, and universal access to essential public services.

Theme of World Population Day 2026

The 2026 theme, “Realizing the hopes and aspirations of young people – today and for the future,” is based on the report “Lives, Choices and Futures: What Young People Want and What Shapes Their Decisions About Relationships and Parenthood.”

The report draws insights from over 108,000 internet-connected adults aged 18–39 across 73 countries, highlighting the aspirations, challenges, and decisions of young people regarding relationships, parenthood, and future family life.

Global and India’s Population Trends

The world’s population took thousands of years to reach one billion, but increased rapidly over the past two centuries. It crossed seven billion in 2011 and is projected to reach approximately 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 billion by 2050.

India, with a population of approximately 1.4 billion, remains one of the world’s most populous countries, accounting for nearly 17% of the global population. According to demographic projections, India’s population is expected to peak between 1.7 and 1.9 billion during the 2060s–2080s, after which it is likely to stabilise and gradually decline.
