Why in News?

The Weaves of India Festival is being held from 24 July to 7 August 2026 at the Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE), Janpath, New Delhi. The Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) under the Ministry of Textiles is organising the festival as part of the celebrations leading to the 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026.

What is the Weaves of India Festival?

The festival celebrates India’s diverse handloom heritage by showcasing 116 heritage weaves from different states. Visitors can explore iconic textiles such as Banarasi, Jamdani, Kanchipuram Silk, Sambalpuri Ikat, Paithani, Kani Pashmina, Ilkal, Kotpad, and Himroo. The exhibition also connects master weavers, designers, researchers, buyers, and the public on a common platform.

Why is the festival important?

India has one of the world’s largest handloom sectors. The sector supports millions of artisans and preserves centuries-old weaving traditions. The festival promotes authentic handwoven products, strengthens market access for weavers, and encourages sustainable and ethical textile production. It also helps preserve India’s intangible cultural heritage.

How does the handloom sector contribute to India?

Handloom fabrics are woven manually without power-driven machinery. The sector:

• Generates large-scale rural employment.
• Preserves traditional weaving skills.
• Promotes women-led household enterprises.
• Contributes to exports and the creative economy.
• Strengthens the Vocal for Local initiative.

The Ministry of Textiles supports the sector through schemes such as the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP), Raw Material Supply Scheme (RMSS), and marketing initiatives for weavers.

National Handloom Day is observed every year on 7 August. The Government of India started this observance in 2015 to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement of 1905, which encouraged the use of indigenous products during the freedom struggle. The Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE) serves as a government-operated retail outlet that promotes authentic Indian handloom and handicraft products.
