V.O. Chidambaranar Port: India’s First Major Port to Achieve Scope-2 Emission-Free Status

Why in News?

The V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, became India’s first major port to achieve Scope-2 Emission-Free status on 10 August 2026. The port also became the first Indian major port to receive ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System.

The achievement highlights India’s efforts to promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low-carbon port infrastructure.

What are Scope-2 Emissions?

Scope-2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the consumption of purchased electricity, steam, heating, or cooling. These emissions occur at the facility that generates the energy rather than directly at the organisation’s premises.

A port can achieve Scope-2 Emission-Free status when its renewable energy generation is sufficient to offset its electricity consumption during the defined assessment period.

Independent verification for the fourth quarter of 2025–26 confirmed that VOC Port generated more renewable energy than it consumed. During the entire 2025–26 financial year, renewable energy reportedly met 93.89% of the port’s total electricity consumption.

How did V.O. Chidambaranar Port achieve this status?

The port has developed significant renewable energy infrastructure. Its existing green-energy capacity includes:

  • Solar power: 7.04 MW
  • Wind power: 2 MW

The port has also planned additional renewable-energy projects. These include 2 MW of ground-mounted solar capacity and 17 MW of wind capacity supported by 5 MWh battery storage.

The port is also developing a Green Hydrogen Hub as part of its broader clean-energy transition.

Bureau Veritas recognised VOC Port as Scope-2 Emission-Free. The Indian Register Quality Systems (IRQS) awarded the port ISO 50001:2018 certification.

ISO 50001:2018 provides a framework for organisations to establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve an Energy Management System (EnMS). It promotes systematic energy monitoring and efficiency improvements.

VOC Port has undertaken several sustainability and digital initiatives. On 23 June 2026, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal released the port’s first Sustainability Report. According to the report, clean-energy transition measures helped reduce the port’s net carbon emissions by 45%.

The port also signed an MoU with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya to strengthen education and skills related to logistics.

On the same occasion, VOC Port launched PortGPT, an enterprise-grade generative AI mobile application. It was described as the first such application implemented by an Indian major port, supporting the growing use of artificial intelligence in port operations.

The transition towards renewable energy can help ports reduce their dependence on fossil-fuel-based electricity. Battery storage can further support renewable integration by storing electricity when generation is high and supplying it when generation falls.
