Unjha Cumin and Unjha Fennel Receive Geographical Indication (GI) Tags
Why in News?
Unjha Cumin (Jeera) and Unjha Fennel (Variyali) from North Gujarat have been granted Geographical Indication (GI) tags by the Geographical Indications Registry of India. The certificates were issued on 28 March 2026, and the products have been registered in the name of the Unjha Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) under Class 30 of the Nice Classification for spices.
The GI recognition strengthens the identity of Gujarat’s renowned spice industry and provides legal protection to these region-specific agricultural products.
What is a Geographical Indication (GI)?
A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products that originate from a specific geographical area and possess qualities, reputation, or characteristics essentially attributable to that place of origin.
GI tags help consumers identify authentic products while protecting producers from misuse and imitation. They also promote traditional knowledge, local craftsmanship, and region-specific agricultural practices.
In India, GI registration is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, and is administered by the Geographical Indications Registry under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Why is Unjha Famous for Cumin and Fennel?
Unjha, located in Mehsana district of North Gujarat, is one of India’s largest agricultural trading centres, particularly for cumin (jeera) and fennel (variyali).
The town has developed a strong reputation for spice cultivation, grading, storage, processing, and marketing over several decades. Its favourable agro-climatic conditions, fertile soils, and well-established market infrastructure have contributed to the distinctive quality and reputation of these spices.
The Unjha Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) serves as the registered proprietor of both GI-certified products.
GI Registration of Unjha Cumin and Unjha Fennel
The GI registration covers both products under Class 30 of the Nice Classification, which includes:
- Spices
- Coffee
- Tea
- Flour
- Cereals
- Bakery products
- Other processed food items
The GI tag legally recognizes Unjha Cumin and Unjha Fennel as agricultural products uniquely associated with the Unjha region of Gujarat.
This registration provides exclusive rights to authorized producers and helps prevent unauthorized use of the product names by traders outside the designated geographical area.

It prevents unauthorized use or imitation of products carrying the GI name.
Market Recognition
Consumers can easily identify authentic products originating from the designated geographical region.
