Why in News?
Iran-aligned Houthi forces seized the strategic port city of Mokha (Mocha) in Yemen on 10 September 2026. The takeover represents the Houthis’ largest territorial gain since the 2022 truce and has increased concerns over maritime security in the Red Sea. Mokha lies about 80 km from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

Mokha is a port city on Yemen’s western coast along the Red Sea. It is located in Taiz Governorate. Its proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb gives it major strategic importance. The strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and provides a maritime link between the Mediterranean region and the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal.
The Houthi capture followed the withdrawal of internationally recognised Yemeni government forces from the city. The advance has raised fears of renewed large-scale conflict in Yemen.
Historical Importance
Mokha was historically an important centre of the global coffee trade. The city’s name became associated with “Mocha coffee”, a term that remains widely used for coffee and coffee flavouring.

The capture of Mokha can strengthen Houthi access to Yemen’s western coastline.
It also brings the group closer to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and strategic Red Sea islands. Reports indicate that Houthi forces subsequently advanced towards islands including Hanish.

Who are the Houthis?

Iran provides political and military support to the Houthis, although Tehran has denied directly controlling the group. Since late 2023, Houthi attacks on commercial vessels have repeatedly disrupted shipping through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Bab el-Mandeb Strait
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait is located between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It connects:
Red Sea → Gulf of Aden → Arabian Sea → Indian Ocean
Its strategic importance comes from its position on major shipping routes connecting Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The latest Houthi advance has therefore raised concerns about the security of another major maritime chokepoint alongside the Strait of Hormuz.
