UN Announces Global Methane Call to Action and AI Environmental Transparency Initiative
Why in News?
During London Climate Action Week 2026, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced a Global Call to Action on Methane and the AI Environmental Transparency Initiative at London’s historic Guildhall. The initiatives aim to reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector and improve transparency regarding the environmental footprint of artificial intelligence (AI), supporting global climate action under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Global Call to Action on Methane
Methane (CH₄) is the second-largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide (CO₂) and is nearly 80 times more potent than CO₂ over a 20-year period. Although methane remains in the atmosphere for a shorter duration than carbon dioxide, its short-term warming effect is significantly higher.
Methane Emissions from the Oil and Gas Sector
The oil and gas industry releases methane through:
- Leaks during production and transportation
- Venting of natural gas
- Flaring at extraction sites
According to the UN, existing technologies can eliminate nearly 70% of methane emissions from oil and gas operations. Guterres called for a global standard to achieve near-zero methane emissions across the entire oil and gas value chain. He also highlighted that 167 billion cubic metres of natural gas were flared globally in 2025, resulting in unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions.
AI Environmental Transparency Initiative
The AI Environmental Transparency Initiative encourages major AI companies to publicly disclose the carbon footprint, water footprint, and land footprint of their AI operations and data centres.
Why is it Important?
AI data centres consume vast amounts of electricity, water, and land for computing infrastructure and cooling systems. According to a UN study:
- AI data centres could consume more electricity by 2030 than all but five countries.
- Their annual water use could meet the basic needs of 1.3 billion people in sub-Saharan Africa for one year.
The UN has urged AI companies to power all data centres with renewable energy by 2030, promoting sustainable digital infrastructure.
Significance for Global Climate Action
The twin initiatives emphasize the need to reduce short-lived climate pollutants like methane while ensuring that the rapid growth of artificial intelligence aligns with global sustainability goals. They also reinforce international efforts to accelerate the clean energy transition and responsible technological development.
