Travel and Tourism Development Index 2026
Why in News?
The World Economic Forum (WEF) released the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2026 on 25 September 2026 in collaboration with Zurich Insurance Group. The index assessed 110 economies on the conditions that support sustainable and resilient development of the travel and tourism sector. India ranked 31st, improving by nine positions from its 2024 position of 39th.
Travel and Tourism Development Index
The TTDI measures the factors and policies that enable the sustainable and resilient development of travel and tourism. It does not directly measure tourism performance through indicators such as tourist arrivals, tourism spending or tourism revenue.
The 2026 framework consists of 17 pillars and 102 indicators, organized under five broad dimensions. These include the enabling environment, tourism policy and enabling conditions, infrastructure, tourism resources and the sustainability of travel and tourism.
Tourism development conditions improved across most economies. According to the WEF, 101 of the 110 economies improved their TTDI scores between 2024 and 2026, while average scores increased by about 2.1%.
India’s Position in TTDI 2026
India ranked 31st in 2026, compared with 39th in the 2024 edition. India’s tourism ecosystem benefits from its cultural and natural resources, tourism infrastructure, price competitiveness and business travel facilities.
India’s large heritage base is also significant for tourism development. The country has a diverse combination of historical monuments, cultural traditions, festivals, museums and natural attractions.

Japan moved to the top position in the 2026 index, followed by the United States, Spain, Australia and France.
Key Components of Tourism Development
The TTDI considers several factors that influence the long-term development of tourism:
- Price Competitiveness: Affordability of travel and tourism-related goods and services.
- Cultural Resources: Heritage, cultural attractions, traditions and other assets supporting tourism.
- Tourism Infrastructure: Accommodation, transport connectivity and visitor facilities.
- Business Travel: Conference facilities, connectivity and services supporting business tourism.
- ICT Readiness: Digital infrastructure and technological capabilities supporting tourism.
