Tamilnadu Tops in GER

Tamilnadu has emerged as the leading state in India in terms of Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education, recording 52.3% for the 2023-24 academic year, according to the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24 released by the Union Government. The Tamilnadu GER is significantly higher than the national average of 30%, reflecting its strong focus on expanding access to higher education and improving educational outcomes.

Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in Higher Education

The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) is an important educational indicator that measures the total number of students enrolled in a particular level of education as a percentage of the population belonging to the official age group for that level. In India, the higher education GER is calculated for the 18 to 23 years age group. A higher GER indicates greater participation of young people in colleges, universities, and other higher educational institutions.

Tamil Nadu’s consistent improvement in GER demonstrates the success of its policies aimed at promoting inclusive and accessible higher education.

Tamil Nadu’s Rising Gross Higher Education Enrolment (Tamilnadu GER)

Tamilnadu GER has witnessed steady growth in higher education participation over the past three academic years. The state’s GER increased from 47.0% in 2021-22 to 49.1% in 2022-23, before reaching 52.3% in 2023-24. Maintaining a GER above 47% for three consecutive years highlights the state’s sustained commitment to educational development.

In 2023-24, 35.8 lakh out of 68.4 lakh youth in the 18-23 age group were enrolled in higher education institutions across the state.

Female GER Higher Than Male GER

Tamil Nadu also continued its positive trend in gender inclusion. The female GER stood at 53.1%, surpassing the male GER of 51.6% for the third consecutive year. This reflects increasing participation of women in higher education.

The state had 2,18,656 faculty members in higher education institutions during 2023-24, accounting for 12.6% of India’s total higher education teaching workforce, further strengthening its educational infrastructure.
