Why in News?

The Supreme Court of India is hosting the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum 2026 in New Delhi from 4 to 6 September 2026. The three-day forum brings together Chief Justices, Presidents of Supreme Courts and senior judicial leaders from BRICS Member States and Partner Countries. It is being held ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.

BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum

The BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum provides a platform for judicial dialogue and cooperation among participating countries. The forum focuses on contemporary challenges related to justice delivery, international dispute resolution, technology and sustainable development. India is hosting the forum through the Supreme Court of India.

Justice Surya Kant and Bilateral Meetings

Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant held bilateral meetings with judicial leaders on the opening day. The participating judicial leaders included representatives from Russia, China, Egypt, Indonesia, the UAE, Belarus, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Iran and Uzbekistan. The discussions covered judicial cooperation, mediation, arbitration, commercial courts, mutual recognition of judicial awards and the use of technology in justice delivery. Justice Surya Kant also proposed a common platform for arbitration and mediation to address international commercial disputes.

Key Themes of the Forum

The forum’s substantive discussions focus on four major areas:

1. Mediation and International Commercial Disputes

The participants discussed mediation as an effective mechanism for resolving cross-border commercial disputes.

2. Cross-Border Enforcement of Arbitral Awards

The forum examined challenges in enforcing arbitral awards across different jurisdictions and the scope for greater procedural cooperation.

3. Artificial Intelligence and the Judiciary

The discussions explored the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to improve judicial administration and efficiency.

4. Judicial Leadership and Sustainable Development

The forum examined the role of judiciaries in ecological governance and sustainable development, including sustainable energy systems.

Significance of the BRICS Judicial Forum

The forum strengthens judicial diplomacy and institutional cooperation among BRICS countries and partner nations. It also provides an opportunity to exchange legal practices on emerging issues such as AI in courts, international arbitration, mediation and cross-border enforcement of judgments and awards. On the second day, CJI Surya Kant emphasised timely and predictable justice and called for greater judicial dialogue among participating jurisdictions.
