The Suryapath Tiranga global relay completed its journey on 15 August 2026 across 54 Indian diplomatic missions and posts in 54 countries. The 19-hour relay was organised under the Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign. The initiative marked India’s 80th Independence Day through coordinated flag-hoisting ceremonies across different time zones.
What is Suryapath Tiranga?
Suryapath Tiranga was a coordinated global Tricolour flag-hoisting relay. The sequence moved from east to west, broadly following the path of the rising sun. The initiative connected Indian diplomatic missions across Asia, West Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. It demonstrated India’s global diplomatic and cultural outreach through a common national symbol. The relay began at 1:30 AM IST in Suva, Fiji. The Indian High Commissioner hoisted the national flag at India House. The sequence then moved through countries including New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, Indonesia, Singapore, and the Maldives.
How Did the Global Relay Progress?
The relay continued across multiple international time zones. It reached Pretoria at 12:30 PM IST, Riga at 12:45 PM IST, and Reykjavik at 3:00 PM IST. The relay eventually reached North America. It concluded at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco at around 8:30 PM IST on 15 August. This east-to-west arrangement allowed Indian missions to coordinate celebrations across a large geographical span.
Role of the Tricolour
The Indian national flag, popularly called the Tricolour, has three horizontal bands of saffron, white, and green. The Ashoka Chakra appears at the centre of the white band. The Ashoka Chakra is navy blue and contains 24 spokes. The design and display of the national flag are governed by the Flag Code of India, 2002.
