Shabdalok: India’s First Immersive Language Museum

India’s first immersive language museum, Shabdalok, also known as the Museum of Word, was inaugurated on 19 July 2026 at the National Library campus in Kolkata, West Bengal.

Housed in the historic Belvedere House, Shabdalok functions under the Union Ministry of Culture. The museum showcases India’s vast linguistic diversity and traces the historical evolution of languages across different periods.

What is Shabdalok – Museum of Word?

Shabdalok is dedicated to preserving and presenting India’s rich linguistic heritage through traditional exhibits and modern digital technology.

The museum showcases nearly 380 languages through artefacts, interactive exhibits, and multimedia installations. It also covers the 121 languages recorded in the Census of India 2011.

The initiative helps visitors understand how languages have shaped India’s civilisation, literature, culture, knowledge systems, and social identity.

The museum consists of nine thematic galleries covering different aspects of language and its evolution.
