SEMICON India 2026
Why in News?
The fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 is being held from 17 to 19 September 2026 at Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre), Dwarka, New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on 17 September. The event is jointly organised by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and SEMI. Its theme is “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
What is Semicon 2.0?
The Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 on 15 July 2026 with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore. It builds on Semicon 1.0 and aims to develop a more complete semiconductor ecosystem in India.
Semicon 2.0 is based on six strategic pillars:
- Chip design
- Machines and materials
- Semiconductor fabrication facilities
- Advanced packaging
- Applied research and development
- Talent development
Unlike the first phase, which focused strongly on fabs and ATMP/OSAT facilities, Semicon 2.0 expands support across the wider semiconductor value chain.
India’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Ecosystem
Under Semicon 1.0, 12 semiconductor manufacturing units have been approved across six states with cumulative investment exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore. Five units have commenced commercial production. India has also expanded its semiconductor design capabilities. More than 1 lakh engineers from 500 organisations, including academic institutions and start-ups, have received access to advanced chip-design tools. More than 300 chip designs have been developed through these initiatives.
At SEMICON India 2026, Applied Materials announced a US$5 billion investment over the next decade under its India Vision 2035. The company also plans to expand its India-based supply-chain capacity.
Importance of SEMICON India 2026
The event brings together global semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, researchers and start-ups. More than 600 exhibitors are participating, including around 300 international participants.
SEMICON India 2026 highlights India’s transition from policy development towards semiconductor manufacturing, advanced packaging, equipment, materials, chip design and R&D.
