Revamped India Code Portal

Why in News?

The revamped India Code Portal was launched on 13 August 2026 at Kartavya Bhavan 2, New Delhi by Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Law and Justice.

The upgraded platform aims to provide citizens, lawyers, researchers, and government departments with easier digital access to India’s legislative framework.

The official government portal describes India Code as a repository containing Central legislation and related legal information. It also provides searchable access to legislation and related subordinate material.

What is the India Code Portal?

India Code is the official digital repository associated with India’s legislative system. It provides access to the Constitution, Central Acts, State and Union Territory enactments, and subordinate legislation.

The portal allows users to search legislation using parameters such as Act title, Act number, enactment date, year, ministry or department, along with free-text search.

The Legislative Department maintains the India Code system. The Department’s organisational structure specifically includes an India Code Unit.

What are the New Features?

The revamped portal introduces technology-enabled tools to simplify legal research. These include:

• Semantic search
• Speech-based search
• Multilingual access
• Legislative-history tracking
• Amendment tracking
• Links between primary and subordinate legislation
• QR-enabled access
• Citizen feedback mechanisms

The multilingual interface is particularly significant for legal accessibility. The upgraded system supports access in the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

AI-based legal tools are already being developed within the government ecosystem. The National Informatics Centre’s AI platform, for example, includes tools for speech recognition, translation, summarisation, and generative AI applications.

Why is the Portal Important?

Legal information is often spread across Acts, amendments, rules, regulations, notifications, and other instruments. A searchable central repository can make this information easier to locate.

The portal therefore supports legal transparency, citizen access, digital governance, and efficient legal research. Government service information also describes India Code as providing Central Acts with details such as short title, enactment date, sections, schedules, and footnotes.

The Legislative Department has also been progressively adding Hindi versions of unrepealed Central Acts alongside English texts.
