Why in News?

The Perseid meteor shower reached its peak around 12–13 August 2026. This year’s display offered particularly favourable viewing conditions because the peak coincided with a new Moon. The absence of bright moonlight allowed fainter meteors to remain visible.

The Perseids are among the most prominent annual meteor showers. They are best observed from the Northern Hemisphere.

What is the Perseid Meteor Shower?

The Perseids are an annual meteor shower produced by debris from Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As Earth passes through the comet’s debris stream, tiny particles enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and heat up. Their glowing trails appear as meteors.

The shower is active during the summer months. The 2026 activity period extended from around mid-July into late August, with peak activity around August 12–13.

The meteors appear to originate from a point in the constellation Perseus. This apparent point is called the radiant, which gives the shower its name.

Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle

109P/Swift-Tuttle is the parent comet of the Perseids. It follows a long-period orbit around the Sun and leaves dust and small particles along its orbital path.

Earth crosses this debris stream every year. When the particles encounter the atmosphere, they produce the bright streaks associated with the Perseid meteor shower.

NASA identifies 109P/Swift-Tuttle as the comet of origin for the Perseids. The meteors travel at about 59 kilometres per second.

Why was 2026 favourable for observation?

The new Moon occurred close to the Perseid peak in 2026. This significantly reduced natural sky brightness and created darker conditions for meteor observation.

Under ideal dark-sky conditions, observers can see around 90–100 meteors per hour during peak activity. Actual numbers vary with location, weather, light pollution, and the observer’s viewing conditions.

The best viewing period is generally late night to the hours before dawn, when the Perseid radiant rises higher in the sky.

Meteor showers are named after the constellations or stars from which their meteors appear to radiate. This does not mean the meteors originate from those constellations.

The Northern Hemisphere generally provides better viewing conditions for the Perseids because the radiant lies relatively far north in the sky. Dark locations away from artificial lighting offer significantly better visibility.

No specialised equipment is normally required. Observers can watch the shower with the naked eye after allowing their eyes to adapt to darkness.
