Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Rescue Mission

The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory is a NASA space telescope launched on 20 November 2004 to detect and rapidly study gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and other high-energy cosmic events. The approximately $500 million observatory has detected and followed around 1,800 cosmic explosions during more than two decades in orbit.

Swift was designed to rapidly identify gamma-ray bursts and direct its instruments toward these short-lived, extremely energetic events. Before the planned rescue mission was abandoned, the observatory was orbiting at approximately 347 km (216 miles) above Earth.

Commercial Rescue Mission

In September 2025, NASA awarded a $30 million contract to Arizona-based Katalyst Space Technologies for a commercial mission intended to raise Swift’s orbit and extend its operational life.

The mission involved LINK (Lightweight In-Space Navigation and Kinematics), a robotic servicing spacecraft designed to approach and capture Swift. LINK was launched on 3 July 2026 aboard a Northrop Grumman Pegasus XL rocket from Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.

Attitude-Control Failure

The rescue mission encountered serious problems when LINK entered a multi-axis spin on 28 July 2026 following a critical attitude-control failure.

Engineers attempted to recover the spacecraft by uploading new attitude-control software on 11 August 2026. However, persistent pointing and positioning problems prevented reliable approach and docking operations.

On 19 August 2026, NASA and Katalyst cancelled the planned capture and orbit-reboost operation because a safe docking with Swift was no longer possible.
