What is Cardiac Arrest?
Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively. As a result, blood circulation to vital organs, particularly the brain, is interrupted. It is different from a heart attack, although a heart attack can sometimes trigger cardiac arrest.
What is CPR?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency lifesaving procedure used when a person’s heart has stopped beating effectively and normal breathing has ceased.
CPR primarily involves:
- Chest compressions to maintain blood circulation.
- Rescue breaths where appropriate.
- Continued emergency medical intervention until circulation is restored or advanced medical care becomes available.
In Patekar’s case, doctors attempted resuscitation for approximately 45 minutes.
Medico-Legal Case and Post-Mortem Examination
A medico-legal case (MLC) is registered when a death or medical incident has potential legal or investigative implications. In Nana Patekar’s case, an MLC was registered and a post-mortem examination was to be conducted to establish the medical cause and circumstances of death. A post-mortem, also known as an autopsy, is a medical examination conducted after death. It can help determine the cause of death and identify relevant medical or forensic findings.
