Moldova: Geography, Economy, Political Profile and Relations with India

Why in News?

President Droupadi Murmu visited the Republic of Moldova on 20 July 2026 at the invitation of Moldovan President Maia Sandu. It was the first state visit by an Indian President to Moldova since diplomatic relations were established in 1992.

During talks in Chisinau, both sides focused on the “3 Ts” – Trade, Technology and Talent. Cooperation in AI, pharmaceuticals, IT, agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy and education was also discussed.

India announced the doubling of Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) training slots for Moldova. President Murmu also presented a bust of Mahatma Gandhi to President Maia Sandu.

Moldova: Location and Geography

Moldova is a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It emerged as an independent country following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Key Geographical Features

• Capital: Chisinau
• Borders: Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east and south
• Major River: Dniester (Nistru)
• Access to Sea: Landlocked, but has limited access to international waterways through the Danube at Giurgiulesti
• The disputed Transnistria region lies along the eastern side of the Dniester River.

Its location between Romania and Ukraine gives Moldova considerable geopolitical importance in Eastern Europe.

Economy and Political Profile

Moldova’s economy is driven by agriculture, services, food processing and remittances. Important agricultural products include grapes, fruits and cereals. The country is particularly known for its wine industry.

Moldova has pursued closer economic and political integration with the European Union and became an EU candidate country in 2022.

Maia Sandu serves as President and is a major pro-European political figure. Igor Grosu is the President of the Moldovan Parliament.

India-Moldova Relations

India and Moldova established diplomatic relations in 1992. Cooperation covers trade, education, technology, pharmaceuticals and capacity building.
