Why in News?

Lakadong Turmeric, a premium turmeric variety cultivated in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, is gaining national and international recognition due to its exceptionally high curcumin content and growing market demand. The inauguration of the North East’s largest organic spice processing unit in Meghalaya on 19 June 2026 has further strengthened the value chain of this Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged product.

What is Lakadong Turmeric?

Lakadong Turmeric is a unique variety of turmeric grown in the Lakadong region of the Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. It received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2024, recognizing its distinctive quality, geographical origin, and traditional cultivation practices.

A Geographical Indication is granted under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 to products that possess specific qualities or reputation linked to a particular geographical region.

High Curcumin Content: Key Feature

Curcumin is the primary bioactive compound in turmeric and is widely used in:

Production and Processing in Meghalaya

Approximately 14,000 farmers across 43 villages cultivate Lakadong Turmeric using traditional organic farming methods. To support value addition and processing, the North East’s largest organic spice processing unit was inaugurated in Bhoirymbong, Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya.
