KAZIND-2026
Why in News?
India and Kazakhstan are conducting the ninth edition of the KAZIND joint military exercise from 28 September to 11 October 2026 in Oskemen, Kazakhstan. The exercise is part of the ongoing defence cooperation between the two countries and focuses on joint counter-terrorism operations in a sub-conventional environment.
Exercise KAZIND
KAZIND is a bilateral military exercise between the Indian Armed Forces and the Kazakhstan Armed Forces. The exercise focuses on improving interoperability and operational coordination during counter-terrorism operations under a United Nations mandate.
The training is designed around challenging operational environments, particularly semi-urban and mountainous terrain. Such exercises allow troops from both countries to practise common procedures and develop coordination during joint operations.
KAZIND-2026: Indian and Kazakh Contingents
The Indian contingent comprises 60 personnel, mainly drawn from a battalion of the Garhwal Rifles, along with personnel from the Indian Air Force.A similarly sized contingent from the Kazakhstan Armed Forces, primarily from its Land Forces, is participating in the exercise.The participation of personnel from different branches allows the exercise to incorporate both ground operations and air mobility capabilities.
Operational Focus
KAZIND-2026 includes joint planning and execution of counter-terrorism operations. The exercise also focuses on the integrated employment of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and counter-UAS capabilities.
Training activities include:
- Response to simulated terrorist attacks.
- Raids and search-and-destroy operations.
- Cordon-and-search operations.
- Special heliborne operations.
- Air mobility and coordinated troop movement.
- Employment of drones and counter-drone systems.
- Joint planning and execution of tactical operations.
Validation Exercise and Defence Cooperation
The exercise will conclude with a validation exercise, during which the participating contingents will apply their rehearsed tactics against a simulated terrorist threat.
KAZIND-2026 therefore provides a practical platform for enhancing interoperability, sharing operational experience and strengthening India-Kazakhstan military-to-military cooperation.
