International Type 1 Diabetes Summit 2026

Why in News?

The International Type 1 Diabetes Summit 2026 will be held in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, from 30 July to 1 August 2026. The summit was unveiled at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi on 23 July. The international event is being organised through a collaboration involving The Friends of Mewar, Breakthrough T1D, and the William J. Clinton Foundation. It will bring together endocrinologists, researchers, policymakers, healthcare professionals and patient advocates from countries including India, the United States and Australia.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. As a result, the pancreas produces little or no insulin. People with Type 1 diabetes generally require lifelong insulin therapy to regulate their blood glucose levels. Insulin is an important peptide hormone produced by the beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. It helps glucose move from the blood into cells, where it can be used for energy.

Type 1 vs Type 2 Diabetes

• Type 1 Diabetes: Primarily an autoimmune condition involving destruction of insulin-producing cells.
• Type 2 Diabetes: Mainly involves insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Lifestyle and genetic factors play important roles.
