INS Sudarshini Participates in Sail Boston 2026
Why in News?
INS Sudarshini, the Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship (STS), arrived in Boston, Massachusetts (USA) on 12 July 2026 to participate in the Grand Parade of Sails during Sail Boston 2026. The ship joined an international fleet of over 60 tall ships representing more than 20 countries and remained open to visitors from 12–15 July 2026. The visit forms part of the Indian Navy’s Lokayan 2026 transoceanic expedition.
INS Sudarshini and Lokayan 2026
INS Sudarshini is a sail training vessel of the Indian Navy, primarily used for training naval cadets in traditional seamanship, celestial navigation, leadership, and maritime heritage. Besides training, the ship regularly represents India at international naval events, goodwill visits, and maritime diplomacy initiatives.
The vessel is currently undertaking the Lokayan 2026 Expedition, a 10-month global voyage that commenced from Kochi on 20 January 2026. The expedition aims to strengthen maritime cooperation, showcase India’s naval traditions, and enhance people-to-people ties through port visits and cultural exchanges.
Before reaching Boston, INS Sudarshini participated in the International Naval Review 250 and Sail4th 250 celebrations in New York, where it proudly sailed with the Indian Tricolour during the Parade of Sail on 4 July 2026. Earlier, the ship also made port calls at Norfolk (19–23 June 2026) and Baltimore (26 June 2026).

Sail Boston is one of the world’s premier international gatherings of tall ships, bringing together sailing vessels from across the globe for maritime celebrations, cultural exchanges, and naval diplomacy.
The 2026 edition coincides with the 250th anniversary of American Independence, making it one of the largest maritime commemorative events hosted by the United States.
Participation in such events provides an opportunity for navies to promote friendship, strengthen maritime cooperation, and celebrate shared seafaring traditions.
