INS Sudarshini Reaches Alexandria during Lokayan 26
Why in News?
The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini arrived at Alexandria in Egypt on 23 September 2026 as part of the Lokayan 26 transoceanic expedition. This was the ship’s second visit to Alexandria during the ongoing deployment. The visit aims to strengthen professional cooperation and maritime engagement between the Indian and Egyptian navies.
INS Sudarshini: A Sail Training Ship
INS Sudarshini is a three-masted barque operated by the Indian Navy for sail training, ocean navigation and seamanship instruction. A barque is a sailing vessel with three or more masts. It generally carries square sails on the foremast and mainmast, while the aftermost mast carries fore-and-aft sails.
The ship helps naval personnel develop practical knowledge of traditional sailing techniques, maritime navigation and ship-handling skills. Such training contributes to the preservation of maritime traditions and the development of professional seamanship.
Lokayan 26 Transoceanic Expedition
The Lokayan 26 expedition began from Kochi on 20 January 2026. It is planned as a 10-month voyage covering approximately 22,000 nautical miles, with visits to 18 ports across 13 countries.
The expedition focuses on professional training in:
- Ocean navigation and seamanship.
- Traditional sailing techniques.
- Maritime cooperation and naval diplomacy.
- Cross-cultural interaction with partner countries.
During the voyage, INS Sudarshini crossed the Arabian Sea, the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It also transited the Suez Canal and completed its first Atlantic crossing before reaching Antigua on 27 May 2026.

The Alexandria port call includes professional interactions, courtesy visits and cross-deck engagements with the Egyptian Navy. Such activities promote mutual understanding, naval cooperation and maritime diplomacy between India and Egypt.
