The Indian Air Force (IAF) has been ranked third among the world’s military aviation powers by country in the World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) 2026 Global Air Powers Rankings. India trails only the United States and Russia, reaffirming its position as one of the world’s leading air powers. In the ranking of individual air force service branches, the IAF secured the 6th position, reflecting its growing operational capabilities and ongoing modernization efforts.
The rankings highlight the strength of India’s diverse aircraft fleet, strategic capabilities, and continued investment in advanced military aviation.
What is the WDMMA Global Air Powers Rankings?
The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA) is an international military aviation database that annually evaluates the air power of countries and individual air force branches. The rankings are based on the TruVal Rating (TVR) system, a proprietary methodology that assesses:
- Overall air power capability
- Offensive and defensive strength
- Aircraft quality and quantity
- Modernisation level
- Logistics and operational support
Unlike rankings based solely on fleet size, the WDMMA considers the effectiveness, readiness, and technological sophistication of an air force.
Indian Air Force Fleet and Modernisation
According to the WDMMA 2026 Rankings, the Indian Air Force operates a fleet of 1,716 aircraft, comprising:
- 542 Fighter Aircraft
- 498 Helicopters
- 282 Transport Aircraft
- 374 Trainer Aircraft
This balanced force structure enables the IAF to perform a wide range of missions, including air defence, strategic transport, humanitarian assistance, reconnaissance, and combat operations.
Despite its global standing, the IAF currently operates 29 fighter squadrons, compared to its sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons. To address this capability gap, India has planned the induction of 180 Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft and has proposed the procurement of 114 additional Rafale fighter jets, which are expected to significantly strengthen the country’s air combat capability.
