Why in News?

India has achieved a major milestone in clean energy and nuclear technology by inaugurating the world’s first hydrogen production facility using nuclear process heat on 26 June 2026 at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The technology demonstrator uses the Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) Thermochemical Cycle powered by process heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR), paving the way for large-scale carbon-free hydrogen production.

What is Nuclear Heat-Based Hydrogen Production?

Hydrogen can be produced through thermochemical water-splitting, where high-temperature heat drives a series of chemical reactions to separate hydrogen from water. Unlike conventional electrolysis, thermochemical processes require less electricity and utilize heat generated from advanced nuclear reactors, improving energy efficiency.

Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) Thermochemical Cycle

The Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) Cycle is a high-temperature thermochemical process that produces hydrogen through a closed-loop sequence of chemical reactions. The technology was developed indigenously by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, and uses nuclear process heat instead of relying entirely on electrical energy.

Role of IGCAR and Fast Breeder Test Reactor

The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), located at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, is one of India’s premier nuclear research institutions under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). It specializes in fast reactor technology, advanced nuclear fuel cycles, and next-generation nuclear systems.

Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR)

The Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) supplies the high-temperature nuclear process heat required for the Cu-Cl cycle. FBTR is a sodium-cooled fast reactor that supports advanced reactor research and demonstrates the potential integration of nuclear energy with hydrogen production technologies.
