Why in News?
The Government of India declared 13 July 2026 as a one-day national mourning following the demise of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the former Emir and Father Amir of the State of Qatar. As a mark of respect, the National Flag was flown at half-mast across the country, and official entertainment was suspended for the day.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani: Key Highlights
- Sheikh served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013.
- In 2013, he voluntarily abdicated in favour of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the current Emir of Qatar.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences on 12 July 2026, while Union Minister Kiren Rijiju represented India in conveying condolences to the Qatari leadership.
- Qatar also observed a four-day public mourning beginning 12 July 2026.
National Mourning in India
National mourning is declared by the Union Government on the death of eminent national leaders or distinguished foreign dignitaries. During the notified mourning period:
- The National Flag is flown at half-mast in accordance with the Flag Code of India.
- Official entertainment programmes are cancelled or suspended.
- Government offices continue to function unless otherwise notified.
