In a significant step towards decentralized environmental governance and grassroots conservation, the Government of India has launched the Campus Biodiversity Register (CBR) initiative. Designed to document and preserve the rich flora and fauna residing within educational institutions, this initiative bridges the gap between academic learning and practical biodiversity conservation.

Key Highlights and Significance of Campus Biodiversity Register

  • Decentralized Documentation: The initiative empowers schools, colleges, and universities to meticulously catalogue their local flora, fauna, and microbial diversity, serving as a micro-database for the national biodiversity framework.
  • Alignment with Biological Diversity Act: The CBR feeds directly into the larger mandate of People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, institutionalized by the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA).
  • Citizen Science and Youth Engagement: By involving students and faculty in ecological mapping, it fosters a culture of ‘citizen science’, nurturing environmentally conscious future leaders.

  • Collaborative Networks: Establishing partnerships between academic campuses and research bodies like the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) will enhance technical capacity.
