Why in News?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train on 17 July 2026 from Jind, Haryana. The train will operate on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route, covering 12 intermediate stations. It marks a major milestone in India’s transition towards clean and sustainable transportation.

The train uses hydrogen fuel cell technology, making it an eco-friendly alternative to conventional diesel-powered trains. Since the fuel cell emits only water vapour at the point of use, the train contributes to reducing carbon emissions and supports India’s green mobility goals.

How Does Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Work?

A hydrogen fuel cell generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen.

Key Features of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology

  • No direct carbon dioxide emissions during operation.
  • Water vapour is the only direct by-product.
  • Provides clean and efficient energy for rail transport.
  • Reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

The newly launched train has:

  • 10 coaches
  • Passenger capacity of around 2,600
  • Maximum approved speed of 75 kmph
  • Design speed of 110 kmph

Indigenous Development Under Make in India

The train was developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

Major Highlights of India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train

  • Each driving power car is equipped with a 1,200-kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.
  • Combined power output is 2,400 kW.
  • A dedicated hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been established at Jind.
  • The project is part of the Hydrogen for Heritage initiative launched by Indian Railways in 2023.
