Why in News?

The Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute (SWFI) announced on 4 September 2026 that India will host the inaugural iBRICS Summit in New Delhi. The two-day event is formally titled “The Global Sovereign & Private Deal Room.” It will be held on 12–13 September 2026 at The Oberoi, New Delhi. The summit will take place on the sidelines of the 18th official BRICS Leaders’ Summit.

BRICS and Sovereign Capital

BRICS is an intergovernmental grouping that originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The grouping has increasingly expanded its agenda to areas such as finance, trade, investment and international payment systems. Sovereign capital refers to funds controlled or managed by public institutions. These include:

  • Sovereign wealth funds
  • Public pension funds
  • Government investment institutions
  • Other public capital pools

The Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute (SWFI) is a global platform that tracks sovereign wealth funds and public investment institutions.

iBRICS Summit 2026: Key Features

The iBRICS Summit 2026 will be an invitation-only event. It is expected to bring together more than 500 institutional investors, finance ministers and business leaders managing a combined $1 trillion in capital. A closed-door roundtable involving around 250 principals is scheduled for 12 September. The discussions will focus on non-dollar settlement corridors and a proposed “Sovereign Capital Compact.”

Investment and Economic Themes

The summit will provide a transaction-oriented platform for connecting sovereign wealth funds, public pension funds and family offices with investment opportunities. Major sectors include:

  • Infrastructure
  • Technology
  • Critical minerals
  • Energy transition
  • Strategic investments

The event highlights the growing role of sovereign capital in financing long-term development and strategic economic priorities.

Digital Payments and CBDCs

The summit will also discuss cooperation between national fast-payment systems and Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Important payment systems include:

  • UPI: India’s real-time retail payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India.
  • Pix: Brazil’s instant payment system launched by the Central Bank of Brazil.
  • CBDCs: Digital forms of sovereign money issued by central banks.

Integration of such systems could support faster and more efficient cross-border payments.

Why is the iBRICS Summit Important?

The summit is significant because it combines sovereign investment, private capital, payment innovation and BRICS economic cooperation. It also reflects efforts to develop alternative financial and payment arrangements beyond traditional dollar-centric systems.
