Why in News?

The Ministry of Culture launched the Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign on 6 August 2026 in New Delhi. The nationwide campaign will run from 9 August to 17 August 2026. It marks the fifth year of the Har Ghar Tiranga initiative, which began in 2022 under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The 2026 edition has a special focus on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, India’s National Song.

What is Har Ghar Tiranga 2026?

Har Ghar Tiranga is a nationwide Jan Bhagidari (people’s participation) campaign centred on the Indian National Flag, or Tiranga. The initiative encourages citizens to display the national flag at their homes and participate in activities celebrating India’s independence and national identity.

The campaign was launched in 2022 as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. It has since become closely associated with Independence Day observances during August. The 2026 campaign will run for nine days, from 9 August to 17 August. Citizens are encouraged to participate in flag-related activities and promote awareness about the significance and proper use of the National Flag.

Vande Mataram and Har Ghar Tiranga 2026

The 2026 edition is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. The Ministry of Culture has incorporated mass singing of Vande Mataram into the campaign. The Har Ghar Tiranga portal will also provide a five-step online tutorial to help citizens learn the correct vocal rendition of the National Song. Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and holds an important place in India’s freedom struggle and national cultural history.

Suryapath Tiranga and Global Outreach

The campaign will also have an international dimension through Suryapath Tiranga, a global relay initiative announced by the Ministry of External Affairs. Indian embassies and consulates across 54 countries will participate in the initiative. It will digitally track and broadcast flag-hoisting ceremonies from 14 August to 15 August 2026. The initiative seeks to connect Indian diplomatic missions and the Indian diaspora with Independence Day celebrations.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day will be observed on 14 August 2026 during the campaign period. The day commemorates the suffering and displacement associated with the Partition of India in 1947. The Tiranga consists of three horizontal bands of saffron, white, and green, with the Ashoka Chakra in navy blue at the centre of the white band. The National Flag is governed by the Flag Code of India, 2002, along with relevant provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.
