Asia’s First Dedicated Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ) in Gwalior
Why in News?
Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, is set to host Asia’s first dedicated Telecom Manufacturing Zone (TMZ), attracting proposed investments of approximately ₹5,500 crore from 24 companies. The project is expected to create more than 18,000 employment opportunities and establish an integrated ecosystem for telecom equipment and component manufacturing. The Department of Telecommunications and the Government of Madhya Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project in July 2026.
What is a Telecom Manufacturing Zone?
A Telecom Manufacturing Zone is an industrial cluster designed to bring together companies involved in the production of telecom equipment, components, testing, research, and allied services. The proposed Gwalior TMZ is planned as an ecosystem of approximately 24–25 manufacturing units covering six key telecom manufacturing verticals.
The initiative is expected to support domestic production of telecom equipment, strengthen supply chains, encourage innovation, and reduce dependence on imported products. It is also linked with national programmes such as the India Semiconductor Mission, Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, and Telecom Technology Development Fund.
Investment, Land and Infrastructure
The proposed investment of ₹5,500 crore was consolidated through investor roadshows in Delhi and Mumbai in August 2026. Around ₹3,500 crore was committed at the Delhi investors’ meeting, followed by ₹2,000 crore at the Mumbai meeting.
Approximately 170 acres have been identified for the first phase:
- More than 90 acres in Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Counter Magnet City (SADA).
- Over 70 acres in the Gwalior IT Park.
The project includes a proposed Common Testing Lab package of approximately ₹500 crore, which is intended to support testing and validation of telecom products.
Connectivity and Employment Potential
