Global Wind Day 2026
Why in News?
Global Wind Day 2026 will be observed on 15 June 2026 as the 18th annual observance dedicated to promoting wind energy and renewable electricity. India will host the Global Wind Day 2026 Conference in Goa under the theme “Wind Energy: From Ambition to Acceleration”.
The event is being organized globally by WindEurope and the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and renewable energy experts.
What is Global Wind Day 2026?
Global Wind Day is an international awareness campaign observed every year on 15 June to highlight the importance of wind power in achieving sustainable energy transition and combating climate change.
Objectives of Global Wind Day 2026
- Promote awareness about wind energy.
- Encourage investments in renewable power.
- Support decarbonisation of the energy sector.
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
- Highlight the role of wind power in achieving climate goals.
Global Wind Day 2026: Theme for 2026
“Our Wind, Our Community”
The theme emphasizes community participation, local benefits, and inclusive growth through renewable energy development.
Understanding Wind Energy
Wind energy is generated by converting the kinetic energy of moving air into electricity using wind turbines.
How Wind Turbines Work
- Wind rotates turbine blades.
- The blades turn a rotor connected to a generator.
- Mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy.
- Electricity is transmitted to the power grid.
Key Features
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Renewable Source | Naturally replenished |
| Clean Energy | No direct greenhouse gas emissions |
| Non-Fossil Fuel | Does not require coal, oil, or gas |
| Sustainable | Long-term energy source |
| Scalable | Suitable for both onshore and offshore installations |
Types of Wind Energy Projects
Onshore Wind Farms
- Located on land.
- Lower installation cost.
- Easier maintenance.
Offshore Wind Farms
- Installed in coastal waters.
- Stronger and more consistent wind speeds.
- Higher energy generation potential.
India has begun expanding its offshore wind energy ambitions, particularly along the Gujarat and Tamil Nadu coasts.
India’s Wind Power Journey
India has emerged as one of the world’s leading wind energy producers.
Installed Wind Capacity Growth
| Year | Installed Capacity |
| March 2014 | 21.04 GW |
| March 2026 | 56.09 GW |
India’s wind power capacity has nearly tripled over the last decade.
Additional Capacity
- Around 28 GW of wind projects are currently under implementation.
Global Ranking
India ranks 4th globally in installed wind power capacity after:
- China
- United States
- Germany
- India
Why Wind Energy Matters?

Climate Change Mitigation
Wind energy significantly reduces:
- Carbon dioxide emissions.
- Air pollution.
- Greenhouse gas emissions.
Sustainable Development
Wind projects create:
- Employment opportunities.
- Local infrastructure development.
- Rural economic growth.
Supporting India’s Climate Goals
Wind power contributes to India’s commitments under:
- Paris Agreement.
- Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
- Net Zero Target by 2070.
