The Government of India has approved the Fotu La Tunnel Project on National Highway-01 (NH-01) in Ladakh at an estimated cost of ₹1,196.22 crore. The project includes a 2.65 km alignment, comprising a 1.96 km twin-tube tunnel and 0.69 km of approach roads.
Location of Fotu La Tunnel
Located at an altitude of about 4,108 metres, Fotu La Pass is the highest point on the Uri–Srinagar–Leh highway corridor. NH-01 serves as a vital lifeline for Ladakh, supporting civilian movement, transportation of essential supplies, tourism, and defence logistics.
The Fotu La Tunnel Project
The proposed tunnel will feature a unidirectional twin-tube design, with separate tubes for traffic movement. Such tunnels improve road safety, traffic management, and operational efficiency. The project is expected to reduce travel distance by approximately 8.5 kilometres.
Currently, the Fotu La route faces challenges such as steep gradients, sharp hairpin bends, heavy snowfall, icy roads, and frequent winter closures. These conditions often disrupt transportation and increase travel risks.
Benefits of the Project
The tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity, reduce weather-related disruptions, and improve accessibility throughout the year. It will also strengthen strategic mobility in the border region by facilitating faster movement of defence personnel, equipment, and supplies.
The project is part of India’s broader effort to develop modern infrastructure in the Himalayan region, similar to the Atal Tunnel and Zojila Tunnel projects. Once completed, the Fotu La Tunnel is expected to enhance regional development, tourism, road safety, and national security in Ladakh.
