The Indian Air Force (IAF) has sent a team to Australia for Exercise Pitch Black 2026, highlighting its defense partnership with Australia and other Indo-Pacific nations. Arriving on 17 July 2026, the team includes four Rafale fighter jets, two C-17 Globemaster III transport planes, and over 120 Air Warriors. The exercise is scheduled from 20 July to 7 August 2026 at RAAF Bases Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley.

This is significant as it’s the first participation of Rafale fighter aircraft in the exercise, reflecting advancements in India’s air combat abilities, previously showcased with Su-30MKI fighters.

What is Exercise Pitch Black?

Exercise Pitch Black is a major international air combat exercise led by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). It is one of the largest military aviation events in the Indo-Pacific region. This exercise allows air forces from different countries to improve their readiness and work better together in realistic combat situations.

The 2026 edition will include about 20 countries, almost 100 military aircraft, and more than 2,500 personnel. The exercise will feature complicated air combat missions, team planning, drills for working together, and training with fifth-generation F-35 stealth fighters.
