Why in News?

Exercise Eager Lion 2026 began on 15 September 2026 at Fort Carson, Colorado, with the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Jordanian Armed Forces participating. More than 200 military personnel from the United States and Jordan are taking part in the two-week exercise. The 2026 edition marks the 12th iteration of the biennial exercise and is being hosted by the Colorado National Guard. It is also the first time the United States is hosting Exercise Eager Lion.

What is Exercise Eager Lion?

Exercise Eager Lion is a biennial bilateral military exercise between the United States and Jordan. It aims to improve military interoperability, operational readiness, planning and coordination between the two countries. The exercise has traditionally strengthened U.S.-Jordanian military cooperation and provides an opportunity to train forces in complex operational environments. Eager Lion 2026 is particularly significant because the exercise has shifted to U.S. territory for the first time.

Operational Areas of Eager Lion 2026

The 2026 exercise includes training scenarios focused on:

  • Counterterrorism
  • Air defence
  • Maritime security
  • Cyber operations
  • Disaster response

The exercise involves command-post and cyber-defence training. It is designed to improve coordination between U.S. and Jordanian forces across multiple operational domains.

U.S.-Jordan Military Cooperation

The exercise also reflects the long-standing relationship between Colorado and Jordan under the State Partnership Program (SPP). The U.S. State Partnership Program was established in 1993 to connect U.S. National Guard units with military and security institutions of partner countries. Colorado and Jordan began their partnership in 2004. The partnership has supported long-term military cooperation and people-to-people relationships between the two sides. Personnel from both the Colorado National Guard and Illinois National Guard are participating in Eager Lion 2026.

Significance of Exercise Eager Lion

Eager Lion 2026 demonstrates the importance of bilateral military interoperability and multi-domain preparedness. Its focus on cyber defence, air defence, maritime security, counterterrorism and disaster response reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of modern military operations. The first U.S.-hosted edition also provides an opportunity for Jordanian and American forces to train together in a different operational environment while strengthening their established defence partnership.
