
E-Eye: IIT Guwahati Develops Low-Cost Device for Rapid Detection of Water Contaminants
Why in News?
IIT Guwahati developed “E-Eye”, a low-cost portable optical sensing device for rapid detection of toxicants and cancer-causing heavy metals in water and biological samples. The device was announced on 6 August 2026 and is designed for on-site testing, digital measurement, and wireless data transmission.
The device costs approximately ₹3,500, while each test costs around ₹2. Its low cost makes it suitable for wider field-level water quality monitoring.
What is E-Eye?
E-Eye is a portable optical sensing device that converts the colour intensity of a chemical reaction into digital readings. It uses the Beer-Lambert law, a principle of spectrophotometry that establishes a relationship between light absorption and the concentration of a substance in a sample.
The device combines optical sensing with digital technology. It can provide testing results on-site and transmit data wirelessly. This approach can reduce dependence on conventional laboratory-based testing for certain applications.
What contaminants can E-Eye detect?
Laboratory validation covered more than 2,700 samples. Researchers used the device to detect several contaminants and biological indicators, including:

Its reported testing cost of around ₹2 per sample could make frequent water-quality monitoring more accessible. The technology can particularly support locations where laboratory infrastructure remains limited.

The research was led by Prof. Tapas K. Mandal and Prof. Harshal B. Nemade of IIT Guwahati. Researchers from KIIT Bhubaneswar and Ramakrishna Mission Residential College, Kolkata, also contributed to the project.
The findings were published in the IEEE Sensors Journal. The project received funding from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for support linked to the Government of India’s Jal Jeevan Mission.
ENVIONIX Labs Pvt Ltd was established to commercialise the E-Eye technology. Technology transfer to industry partners forms part of the planned deployment model.
The Jal Jeevan Mission focuses on providing Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to rural households. Reliable water-quality testing supports the broader objective of ensuring safe drinking water.
