Cyclospora Outbreak 2026: Cases reported across US

Why in News?

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a sharp rise in Cyclospora infections across the United States. As of 15 July 2026, the CDC has confirmed 1,645 domestically acquired cases of cyclosporiasis in 34 states. More than 5,100 additional cases are under review for confirmation.

Health authorities are investigating the outbreak, which is believed to be linked to contaminated fresh produce, particularly raw vegetables consumed without cooking.

What is Cyclospora?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic protozoan parasite that infects the small intestine. Humans become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the parasite’s oocysts.

Common Symptoms of Cyclosporiasis

• Watery diarrhoea
• Stomach cramps
• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Fatigue

Without treatment, the illness can last for several days or even weeks.

2026 Outbreak: Key Highlights

The current outbreak has affected multiple states, with the largest cluster reported in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

Major Findings

• More than 400 cases reported in the four-state cluster.
• Median illness onset date: 22 June 2026.
• Patients range from 2 to 95 years of age.
• Among the 1,645 confirmed cases, 141 patients (9%) required hospitalisation.
• No deaths have been reported.

Michigan reported 3,309 cases and 44 hospitalisations, while north-western Ohio recorded 1,119 cases and 46 hospitalisations.

Source of Infection and Surveillance

Investigators suspect bagged salads and lettuce as the likely source of infection. However, no single food item has been officially confirmed at the national level.

As a precaution, Taco Bell temporarily removed fresh produce from its restaurants, although no direct link has been established.

Another important development is that FoodNet, the U.S. foodborne disease surveillance network, made Cyclospora tracking optional from 1 July 2025. This may affect national disease monitoring and data comparison.
