CSIR is implementing the Smart Village Initiative in Kusunpur village, Odisha, using AI-enabled technologies to reduce human-crocodile conflict, improve rural livelihoods, and promote sustainable development. Learn key features, significance, and UPSC exam facts.
CSIR Smart Village Initiative
Why in News?
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has launched the Smart Village Initiative in Kusunpur village of Odisha, deploying AI-based technologies and infrastructure solutions to address rural challenges. The project aims to reduce human-animal conflict, improve livelihoods, and demonstrate the role of science and technology in rural transformation.
For CSIR Smart Village Initiative Kusunpur has been identified as one of Odisha’s most vulnerable human-crocodile conflict zones, recording more than 20 deaths in the last four years.
What is the CSIR Smart Village Initiative?
The Smart Village Initiative is a rural development programme that seeks to transform villages through the application of:
- Science and technology
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Sustainable infrastructure
- Digital solutions
- Community participation
The initiative follows CSIR’s “Lab-to-Land” approach, under which technologies developed in research laboratories are directly deployed to solve real-world rural problems.
Kusunpur Village: Why Was It Selected?
Kusunpur village is located near areas inhabited by saltwater crocodiles and has witnessed repeated incidents of human-wildlife conflict.
Challenges Faced
- Frequent crocodile encounters.
- Loss of human lives.
- Threat to livelihoods and fishing activities.
- Limited access to modern rural infrastructure.
The Smart Village Initiative aims to provide a technology-driven solution to these challenges.
AI-Based Human-Animal Conflict Mitigation System
One of the most innovative components of the project is the proposed AI-enabled Wild Animal Detection and Alert System.
How the System Works
- AI-powered cameras and sensors monitor wildlife movement.
- The system identifies crocodile presence near human settlements.
- Real-time alerts are sent to authorities and local residents.
- Early warning helps prevent accidents and fatalities.
Expected Benefits
- Reduction in human-crocodile conflict.
- Improved public safety.
- Better coexistence between communities and wildlife.
- Protection of biodiversity.
Key Features of the Smart Village Initiative

- Loss of life.
- Crop damage.
- Livestock depredation.
- Property destruction.
Common Conflict Species in India
- Elephants
- Tigers
- Leopards
- Crocodiles
- Bears
- Wild boars
Technological interventions such as AI-based monitoring are increasingly being used to mitigate such conflicts.
