8th BRICS Youth Energy Summit 2026: Energy for All

Why in News?

India hosted the virtual Eighth BRICS Youth Energy Summit on 17 August 2026 under its BRICS Chairship 2026. The summit focused on strengthening youth participation in energy cooperation among BRICS countries. More than 100 participants from academia, government institutions and energy ministries took part in the summit.

BRICS Youth Energy Summit

The BRICS Youth Energy Summit provides a platform for young professionals, researchers and policymakers to discuss energy-related challenges and opportunities.

The 2026 summit was organised under India’s BRICS Chairship theme:

“Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”

The dedicated Energy Track was based on the theme “सर्वेषां ऊर्जम्” (Energy for All).

The summit emphasised the importance of youth participation in developing sustainable, secure and inclusive energy systems.

Three Priority Areas

More than 20 youth panellists presented perspectives from different BRICS countries across three major areas:

1. Energy Security and Sustainability

Discussions focused on:

  • Diversification of energy sources.
  • Resilient energy supply chains.
  • Sustainable energy systems.
  • Reducing vulnerabilities in energy supplies.

2. Energy Access and Equity

The summit highlighted the importance of ensuring affordable and reliable energy access for all sections of society.

Energy equity is particularly important for developing economies because access to modern energy supports economic growth, healthcare, education and livelihoods.

3. Technology and Innovation

Participants discussed the role of digitalisation, smart grids, energy storage and emerging technologies in transforming energy systems.

Technology can help improve energy efficiency, integrate renewable sources and strengthen the resilience of electricity networks.

Participating Institutions

Representatives from several international and multilateral energy organisations participated in the summit, including:

  • BRICS Youth Energy Agency
  • Sustainable Energy for All
  • International Solar Alliance
  • International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)

The discussions also covered innovative financing mechanisms and digital technologies for energy-sector development.

India’s Energy Initiatives

India highlighted domestic initiatives related to clean energy and decentralised solar power, including PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar.

The summit also referred to the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence on Smart Grids and Energy Storage, reflecting the growing importance of digital technologies and storage systems in future energy infrastructure.

Importance of Youth in Energy Transition

The global energy transition requires technological innovation, skilled human resources and new approaches to energy policy. Youth participation can contribute to research, entrepreneurship, policy development and deployment of clean-energy technologies.

The BRICS Youth Energy Summit therefore provides a platform for developing cross-border youth cooperation in energy, while linking energy security with sustainability, equity and innovation.
