5th BRICS Working Group Meeting on Geospatial Technologies
IIT Tirupati hosted the 5th BRICS Working Group Meeting on Geospatial Technologies and its Applications from 20 to 22 July 2026. The three-day meeting was held at its Yerpedu campus in Andhra Pradesh in hybrid mode.
The event was organised under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. It brought together experts and delegates from BRICS and partner countries to strengthen international cooperation in geospatial science and its applications.
What are Geospatial Technologies?
Geospatial technologies are tools used to collect, analyse, map, and interpret data linked to specific locations on Earth.
Major Geospatial Technologies
- Remote Sensing: Collects information about Earth using satellites or aircraft.
- GIS: Captures, stores, analyses, and displays spatial data.
- GNSS: Provides satellite-based positioning and navigation services.
- Digital Mapping: Creates digital representations of geographic features.
These technologies are widely used in disaster management, agriculture, urban planning, transport, defence, and environmental monitoring.
Key Themes of the BRICS Meeting
The meeting focused on emerging technologies and stronger cooperation among participating countries.
Major themes included:
- Geospatial infrastructure for sustainable development.
- Geospatial applications for climate resilience.
- Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies.
- Artificial Intelligence-based geospatial analytics.
- Geospatial data interoperability.
Data interoperability allows different digital systems to exchange and use geospatial information through compatible standards.
IIT Tirupati’s Navavishkar I-Hub Foundation (IITNiF) also participated in organising the meeting.
BRICS and Science Cooperation
BRICS serves as an important platform for cooperation among emerging economies. Its collaboration extends to science, technology, innovation, climate action, and digital technologies.
Geospatial cooperation can help participating countries improve resource management, infrastructure planning, disaster preparedness, and climate monitoring.
